Dragon Tree Seeds

Start by scarifying the Dragon Tree seeds — soak them in warm water for 24 hours, and if the seed coat still feels hard, repeat the soak. No stratification needed here, unlike a lot of temperate tree species. Sow at a depth of 1/4 to 3/8 inch in a warm spot (75°F or higher). Germination is slow and uneven, sometimes taking several weeks, sometimes stretching into months, so don't assume a failed batch just because three week passes with nothing showing.

Give seedlings moderate sun exposure — a few hours of direct light with some shade during the hottest part of the day suits them better than full blazing sun. Soil should be well-drained and slightly acidic; they can grow in basically any potting mix, but a cactus or succulent blend drains best and avoids the wet feet Dragon Tree seeds hate. Water needs are low once established, and overwatering is the single fastest way to rot the roots, so let the soil dry out between waterings.

Dragon Tree is not grown for harvest — the sap has a history of use as a dye and lacquer, and it shows up in old folklore, but none of it is edible. Growth is slow, so repotting is rarely needed, and a root-bound plant will not suffer for it. Protect young plants from frost if you're growing outdoors in the cooler end of zone 9. Flowering is rare and usually only happens after 10–15 years, producing white, perfumed blooms in summer that also attract pollinators. For landscape planting, space trees roughly 20 feet apart since the mature canopy spreads wide.
