Sow seeds directly into the garden when soil temperatures are between 60–80°F (15–25°C), at a depth of ¼–½ inch. Germination comes in 7–12 days — faster when soil stays consistently moist rather than going through wet-dry cycles. If the timing is not right for direct sowing, seeds start well in trays for transplanting later; the plant is not fussy about which method you use. Space plants 4–12 inches apart depending on your harvest goal — closer spacing gives you tender, slender stems ideal for stir-frying, wider spacing produces larger individual plants. Early spring and late summer into autumn are the two windows that work best, giving most gardeners two productive runs per year.

Chinese flowering cabbage needs full sun — at least 6 hours daily — to develop the stem thickness and leaf density worth harvesting. Soil should be fertile and free-draining; waterlogged roots slow growth noticeably and make the plant more vulnerable to rot at the base. The one care factor that trips up most growers is watering consistency. Let the soil dry out even briefly during the growing period and the plant shifts its energy toward flowering before the stems are ready, which cuts the harvest short. A compost top dressing at planting gives the crop the quick fertility it needs to match its fast growth rate. In raised beds and containers it performs just as well as in open ground, provided drainage is adequate.

Yu Choy Sum is genuinely low-maintenance — the growth cycle is short enough that most pest and disease problems do not get the chance to establish before harvest. The harvest cue is the yellow flower buds: cut when they are just beginning to show color but have not fully opened yet. That window is when stem tenderness and flavor are at their best; wait too long and the texture coarsens. Cut 2–3 inches above the base with a sharp knife and secondary shoots will follow, extending the harvest. Stems, leaves, and buds all go straight to the pan — lightly steamed, stir-fried, boiled, or pickled. Sow a new batch every 2–3 weeks and you can keep harvesting across the full season without gaps.
