Common Rue Seeds

Sow Common Rue seeds when the soil temperature reaches 70°F. Sow seeds directly into well-prepared soil or start them indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost date. Simply scatter seeds, press them gently into the surface, and cover with no more than ¼ inch of fine soil. Germination occurs within 28 days, which is longer than most herbs. Be patient and don't discard the Rue plant seeds and tray. Mix seeds with a little dry sand to evenly space them without overcrowding.

Full sun is required for Common Rue seeds to grow strong. Rue growing in partial shade becomes leggy and loses its compact form. Good drainage is a must, as this is a plant of rocky hills, and water standing at the roots causes rot. Once established, it becomes drought tolerant, so water every 2 to 3 weeks, and that is all. 

Space the plants 12-24 inches apart, as overcrowding will eventually limit air circulation and create fungal issues. Prune to shape in early spring as new growth starts, cutting back the previous year's woody growth. This will encourage the plant to remain dense, not straggly. During the growing season, remove any branches showing signs of discoloration or wilting. Mulch heavily, 24 inches, in the fall to protect the roots through the winter. When handling Rue, gloves are a good idea, as the sap makes your skin sensitive to the sun.
