Ice Plant Mix Seeds

These Ice Plant seeds need light to germinate, so surface-sow and don't bury them — press them into moist seed-starting mix and leave them uncovered. Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct-sow once soil hits 60°F (15°C). Germination takes 10–15 days at 65–75°F (18–24°C). The one thing that kills seedlings at this stage is waterlogged mix: keep it barely moist, not wet, because the stems rot fast at the base when they sit in moisture. Once you see two sets of true leaves, thin to 6 inches apart.

Ice Plant flower seeds grow into plants that want full sun — 6–8 hours minimum, no compromises. Poor soil is fine, sandy or rocky is fine, but drainage has to be good. Heavy clay that holds water after rain is the one condition where this plant reliably fails. Once it's established, it handles dry summers without much help — in a normal season, rainfall does the job. Soil pH between 6.5 and 7.5 works well, but honestly, if the drainage is right and the sun is there, it's not fussy about much else.

There's not a lot to do after planting, which is part of why hardy Ice Plant seeds are worth having in the rotation. No staking, no deadheading, no regular feeding — excess nitrogen just pushes leaves instead of flowers. Pinch young plants back once or twice early on if you want a denser spread rather than a few long runners. If seed-saving is the goal, leave a handful of spent heads to dry on the plant, shake the seeds into a paper envelope once they're brown and papery, and store somewhere cool and dry. At the end of the season, clear out the dead material and the bed is ready.
