About

Valerian (Valeriana Officinalis) is a tall perennial herb native to Europe and Asia, and naturalized across North America. It grows in upright clumps of 3 to 6 feet, with dark green feathery leaves and loose clusters of small pink to white flowers that open in early to mid-summer. How to Grow & Harvest

Sowing & Timing

Start Valerian seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before the last spring frost, or direct sow in spring or fall once soil temperatures settle between 50–75°F. Don’t bury the seeds too deep, just press them lightly onto the surface, no deeper than ⅛ inch. Keep the medium moist and Valeriana Officinalis seeds germinate in 10–21 days. Transplant outdoors after frost risk passes, spacing plants 12–24 inches apart with rows 24–36 inches wide.

Soil, Watering & Fertilization

Valerian herb grows best in full sun but also handles partial shade. In zones 7–9 afternoon shade actually reduces stress on the plant. Valerian plant grows in rich, moist, well-drained loam. Work organic matter into soil before planting, and you will get healthier roots. Mulch around the base to hold moisture and keep roots cool through summer. Water plants regularly and in moderate amounts. Valerian doesn’t like deep infrequent waterings.

Growth & Harvest

Valerian doesn’t require much care. Each spring, work a light layer of compost around the base and that's mostly it. Also, remove spent flower heads through summer, because Valeriana Officinalis self-seeds aggressively and will spread beyond where you planted it. The plant is deer resistant. Roots should be harvested in fall of the second year. Dig carefully, clean them, and dry at low temperature. Remember to consult a physician before any use.
