Dandelion Seeds

Yellow Dandelion seeds prefer cooler soil temperatures for germination, aim for 50–65°F, which usually means early spring or fall sowing. Dandelion seeds do not need to be planted, as they require light for germination. Simply press them into the surface of the soil, or cover them with no more than 1/8 inch of soil. Allow 7-21 days for germination under optimal conditions. Dandelion seeds are best directly sown if you plan to harvest root, as transplanting disturbs the taproot. Space or thin seedlings to 4–6 inches apart once they're established.

Full sun is best for the leaves and root development. However, Dandelions can thrive in partial shade. Soil quality is more important than you might think. Loose, deep, moist soil allows the taproot to grow straight down. This is what you want for medicinal purposes or roasting. They'll grow in poor soil, but the root system is stunted and branched. Water them well when you first plant them. Once they are established, they handle short dry spells.

Taraxacum Officinale flowers are low-maintenance once established. Harvest outer leaves before flowering for the mildest flavor; young spring leaves are the most tender. If you are growing them for greens, cut the flower stalks early to promote leaf production. For root harvest, wait until the fall of the second year when the taproot has had time to develop. They self-seed when mature, so remember to deadhead them if you want to control spread.
