Comfrey Seeds

 Sow Comfrey seeds for planting 3 weeks prior to the last frost date. Direct sowing in the middle of spring is also a good idea. Press the Comfrey seed about half an inch deep, cover it with soil, and make sure the soil is consistently moist. Germination should happen in 14-21 days at 70°F. Don't try to hurry the process with heat; just make sure the soil is moist. If your soil is heavy, add a little sand because Comfrey plant seeds germination rates drop in waterlogged soils. Thin the seedlings to 24-48 inches apart once they have germinated. This Symphytum Officinale seeds spacing looks ridiculous, but it won't look that way in the middle of summer.

Full sun provides the best growing conditions, but Comfrey really doesn’t mind partial shade - it just grows a little slower. Comfrey thrives in average garden soil and some decent drainage is all that is necessary. Comfrey’s taproots can bring up moisture and nutrients from very deep in the earth. Once established Comfrey plants become drought resistant and don't require a lot of watering during dry spells. 

Prune back plants after the first flush of blooms to encourage a second wave of foliage growth through the summer. For compost and mulch use, harvest leaves once the plant has reached 24 inches in height. Deadhead flowers to prevent reseeding, as it spreads quickly and can colonize an area from one or two plants. You can apply slow-release fertilizer once a month. No major pests trouble this plant.
