Spider Plant Seeds

Before you sow Spider flower seeds, give them 5–7 days of cold stratification: wrap them in a damp paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and leave in the fridge. This extra step improves germination rate significantly. After that, direct-sow Spider Plant flower seeds into the ground after your last frost date, barely covering the seeds with soil. They need light to sprout, so bury them too deep. You can also start Cleome Hassleriana seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before transplant, but Cleome grows a taproot fast and doesn't like being translanted. At 70–75°F soil temperature, expect sprouts in 10–14 days.

Spider flowers need full sun — at least 6 hours daily. They handle poor, sandy soil better than most tall annuals, but give them deep, well-drained loam with some compost worked in and you'll get plants pushing 5 feet with dense flower clusters. Water consistently for the first few weeks, then back off. Mature Cleome handles dry spells, and doesn't need frequent watering.

Thin Spider Plant seedlings to 12–18 inches apart, as crowded plants compete and stay short. No deadheading needed, as Cleome drops spent flowers and immediately pushes new buds. You can save seeds in fall for the next season, or leave a few pods to self seed on their own.
