Creeping Thyme Seeds

Sow Creeping Thyme seeds directly outdoors in early spring or fall, or start them indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Press seeds just 1/16 inch deep into the soil — they need light to germinate, so avoid burying them too deeply. For more even coverage across large areas, mix bulk Creeping Thyme seeds with sand before broadcasting. Keep the seedbed consistently moist and maintain a soil temperature of 65°F or above; under these conditions, germination typically occurs within 10–30 days. No stratification or scarification is required.

Creeping Thyme thrives in full sun and performs well in partial shade, though flowering is most abundant with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. It is highly adaptable to poor, sandy, or rocky soils and actually prefers well-drained conditions over rich, fertile ground — overly moist or heavy clay soils can cause root rot. Once established, these purple Creeping Thyme seeds grow into plants that are remarkably drought-tolerant and require very little supplemental watering. Water seedlings regularly during the first few weeks while roots develop, then reduce frequency as plants mature. 

Creeping Thyme is a true low-maintenance perennial — once it takes hold, it largely looks after itself season after season. After flowering in early summer, give plants a light trim or mow them to encourage fresh, compact growth and release a pleasant herbal fragrance. No fertilizing is needed; in fact, overly rich soil can reduce flowering and make plants leggy. Divide clumps every few years to keep the mat dense and vigorous, and remove any weeds during the first season before the thyme fully fills in.
