Tall Strawflower Seeds

Start Helichrysum Bracteatum seeds indoors about 6 weeks before your last expected frost date, or direct-sow outdoors in early spring once the soil reaches 70–75 °F. These are surface-sow seeds — simply press them lightly onto moist growing mix without covering, as they need light to germinate. Keep the surface consistently moist and straw flower seeds sprout within 8–10 days. For even spreading when direct-sowing, mix the tiny Strawflower seed with a pinch of dry sand before scattering. Once seedlings reach 2–3 inches, thin or transplant to a final spacing of about 18 inches apart to allow good airflow and branching.

Tall Strawflower thrives in full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily produces the most vibrant, richly colored blooms. It is remarkably tolerant of poor, sandy, or low-nutrient soils, making it a great choice for challenging spots where many flowers struggle. Good drainage is essential; avoid heavy clay or waterlogged areas, as overly wet roots dull petal color and reduce vigor. Water regularly during the first few weeks after transplanting to help roots establish, then reduce watering — established plants handle short dry spells with ease. 

Once established, the tall Strawflower mix is genuinely low-maintenance and largely pest-resistant, making it a good choice for busy gardeners. Pinching the growing tips when plants reach about 6 inches encourages bushier growth and more flowering stems for cutting. Deadhead spent blooms regularly to extend the flowering season from mid-summer through early fall. For the best dried flowers, harvest stems when buds are just beginning to crack open then hang bunches upside down in a cool, dark, well-ventilated space for 1–2 weeks. If you allow a few flower heads to mature fully on the plant, Strawflowers will self-seed, giving you a natural supply of bulk flower seeds for next season.
