About

Straightneck Summer Squash (Cucurbita Pepo), mostly known as early prolific Straightneck Squash, is a warm-season annual that produces a lot of yields early in the season. The seeds sprout quickly and produce harvests in about 45 to 52 days. The plant grows as a compact, leafy branching mound of 18-36 inches tall and has smooth, bright golden yellow fruits with the straight-neck shape that makes it easy to harvest and slice. It grows as an annual across USDA Zones 3–11. Young fruits are best picked at 6–8 inches to use in the kitchen for sautés, casseroles, and on the grill.

How to Grow & Harvest

Sowing & Timing

Sow Straightneck Squash seeds directly outdoors only after the last spring frost has passed and soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Don’t plant into cold ground, as it will cause poor germination. Squash needs space to develop properly, so plant seeds 1 inch deep with 36–48 inches between plants. Early prolific Straightneck Squash seeds germinate in 4 to 14 days depending on soil temperature.

Soil, Watering & Fertilization

Early prolific Straightneck Summer Squash needs full sun, at least 6–8 hours of direct light per day. Choose fertile, well-drained soil and work in organic compost before planting. Water deeply and consistently, but don’t overwater plants. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of each Straightneck Squash plant to keep soil temperature stable, hold moisture between waterings, and take weeds under control.

Growth & Harvest

Summer squash straightneck varieties are fast. Once the plant hits its stride, fruits go from blossom to harvest-ready in just a few days, so check the plants every 2–3 days during peak season. Cut them off cleanly with a knife. If leaf color starts fading to pale yellow mid-season, add balanced fertilizer to bring the plant back to life. One healthy Straightneck Squash plant can produce for the whole summer if harvested regularly.
