Maximum Mix Snapdragon Seeds

Start indoors eight to ten weeks before last frost. Press Maximum Mix Snapdragon seeds onto the surface of a moist, fine-grained mix and leave them uncovered — Snapdragons are light-dependent germinators. With soil temperature around 18–21 °C, expect sprouts in 10–14 days, sometimes faster if your setup runs warm. When the first true leaves appear, pot up individually. Here's a step most growers skip: after potting, give the seedlings a week at 10–13 °C. Not to harden them off exactly, but because that brief chill triggers more basal branching — you end up with a bushier plant that doesn't need as much pinching later.

Snapdragon flower requires six-eight hours of direct sunlight to produce tight, well-colored spikes — in partial shade the stems stretch and the color goes muddy. Soil matters more than most guides admit. Rich, moisture-retentive mixes that drain poorly cause collar rot. Well-drained loam or sandy loam, pH 6.0–7.0, is the target. Water deeply, then let the top few centimeters dry before watering again. Container plants dry faster, but don’t overwater them, as damp soil is worse than slightly too dry.

Pinch the growing tip once plants reach 10–15 cm and you'll get two to four flowering stems from each plant instead of one. After that, deadhead spent spikes encourage more blooming. In zones with a long mild season, you can get a second flush; a third is possible but you'll be racing frost. For cut flowers, harvest when the bottom third of the spike is open and the top third is still in tight bud. Stems last 7–10 days in a cool vase — re-cut the stem base every two days and they'll push past that easily.
