California Wonder Sweet Pepper is a true heirloom Bell Pepper, first introduced in 1928 and still one of the most planted backyard varieties. Fruits grow blocky and large, typically around 4 inches across, with thick walls that hold their shape when stuffed, sliced raw, or cooked down in a pan. The flesh contains no capsaicin, so the flavour is completely sweet and mild, with no heat. Fruits start out green and ripen to deep red if left on the plant, and both stages are fully usable in the kitchen. Plants grow upright to about 24 inches, produce reliably across USDA Zones 3–12, and carry natural resistance to tobacco mosaic virus.
