About

Single Mix Poppy (Papaver Rhoeas) is a cool-season annual — native to Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa — and the same species that turns roadsides and fills Ukrainian fields before the wheat gets tall. Tissue-thin petals, single-layered. Stems reach 18–24 inches, hairy and branching. In USDA Zones 3–9 it behaves as a self-seeding annual — establish it once and it returns every year. Poppy thrives in wildflower meadows, cottage borders and cutting gardens.

How to Grow & Harvest

Sowing & Timing

Surface-sow Single Poppy seeds directly onto prepared ground. Don't bury them — these seeds need light to trigger germination, and even a thin covering of soil is enough to kill your rates. Press them into the surface and water gently. You can sow seeds in early spring (as soon as soil is workable, even with frost) or in autumn for overwintering and an earlier bloom the following season. Germination occurs in 10–20 days at 55–65°F (13–18°C). 

Soil, Watering & Fertilization

Single Poppy seeds require full sun and well drained soil; Poppies rot in standing water but thrive in lean, even poor, ground. Don’t add too much fertilizer,  as rich soil with high nitrogen pushes leaves at the expense of flowers. Water consistently during germination and early establishment, then back off. Established plants become really drought tolerant and don’t need frequent watering.

Growth & Harvest

For cut flowers, harvest when the bud is just cracking open and color is visible, not when the flower is fully out. Immediately sear the cut end in a flame or dip it in boiling water for ten seconds. Skip that step and they wilt within hours. Leave the last flush of the season, let them dry and reseed for the next season.
