Single Mix Nasturtium (Tropaeolum Majus) is an annual flower that grows across USDA Zone 3 through 9. The Single Mix produces blooms in red, orange, yellow, pink, and near-purple tones, which are deer resistant. Both flowers and leaves are fully edible, with a sharp, peppery bite that actually tastes good in salads and garnishes. Gardeners buy Nasturtium seeds for beds and borders, fence or trellis, edging, gravel and rock gardens. Due to their dwarf habit, plants can serve as groundcovers.

How to Grow & Harvest

Sowing & Timing

Sow directly Nasturtium flower seeds 1/8-1/4 inch deep in the ground after the last frost, once soil is warm enough ( at least 55°F). Space seedlings to 6 inches apart. You can start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost date. If you want fAster germination, soak premium Nasturtium seeds overnight before sowing. Seeds sprout within 10–14 days. 

Soil, Watering & Fertilization

Flower seeds Nasturtium require full sun, however, in zones 9–11, afternoon shade actually helps during peak summer heat. Flowers thrive in poor soil, chalk, sand or loam. They grow in basically any pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Water during establishment, then back off, as Nasturtiums become drought-tolerant once established.

Growth & Harvest

Deadhead regularly to keep new buds coming through fall. For dishes, pick flowers in the morning, their flavor and texture are better early in the day. For pickled Nasturtium seeds, collect green and firm pods. then brine in white wine vinegar with salt and a few peppercorns. They keep for several months and hold up better than capers in hot dishes.
