About

Orange California Poppy (Eschscholzia Californica) is the official state flower of California. Native to the dry slopes and coastal grasslands of the western US and Mexico, it produces four-petaled blooms in a shade of orange, held on wiry stems above blue-green, feathery foliage. In USDA Zones 8–10 it behaves as a short-lived perennial; everywhere else, treat it as a hardy annual that reseeds aggressively. Meadow plantings, roadside patches, dry slopes, cutting gardens — it handles all of these without complaint. One thing that surprises first-time growers: the flowers close at night and on cloudy days.
