Mix Russell Lupine Seeds

The seeds are notoriously hard-coated, and before sowing, it is required to scarify  them lightly with sandpaper or soak in warm water for 24-48 hours before planting. Plant 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and space plants 18-24 inches apart. Under good conditions, seedlings emerge in 14 to 30 days. Plant in spring after last frost, or in fall, so the seeds will stratify naturally over the winter. Both methods work well, however fall-planted Lupines often establish faster then the spring ones.

Full sun is required. Shade causes weakened stalks, and therefore flopped spikes on the Lupines. Russell Lupine Mix prefers well-drained loamy or sandy soil and don't like wet soil, as that causes root rot. Established Lupines have no trouble with average to dry moisture levels and actually prefer not to be overwatered. There is no need to prepare special enriched soil because these flowers fix their own nitrogen and too much fertilizer causes too much foliage and poor blooms.

Remove dead spikes quickly to encourage a second flush of flowers later in the summer. To avoid self-seeding, remove the pods when they turn light brown but before they split open, as Lupines can be quite aggressive in favorable conditions. They really are low-maintenance perennials once the root system is established. A light mulch around the base also helps retain moisture during hot summer weather. In cold climates, a light covering of straw in winter is also a good idea to protect the crown.
