Mix Chief Cockscomb Seeds

Sow Chief Cockscomb Celosia seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before your last expected frost, or sow directly into the garden when nighttime temperatures stay above 60°F. Press Chief Mix Cockscomb Seeds into the surface just 1/8 inch deep. Germination time is 7-14 days at 65-75°F. The medium must be kept consistently moist, but not waterlogged as seeds might rot. Bottom heat really helps with this. When seedlings have their second set of "true" leaves, thin them to 10-12 inches apart, as those growing too close together stretch towards the light and get leggy.

Chief Cockscomb seeds require full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight), otherwise the stems grow at odd angles, and the color becomes a dull brown. Celosia seeds flowers thrive in full sun and well-drained fertile soil, performing exceptionally well in hot climates and greenhouse conditions. Water at the base of the plant, never overhead, as wet leaves in a humid climate causes fungal diseases.

Once established, Chief Cockscomb is a low-maintenance plant. Fertilize once a month with a balanced fertilizer, avoiding heavy nitrogen which will promote leaf growth at the expense of the crest. Deadheading is not necessary, as the blooms last for weeks. However, removing the old flower does encourage the plant to produce new growth. For cutting, the flower heads should be harvested when the crest is fully formed but before the outer petals begin to fade. They dry nicely with the crest upright and will retain their color for months.
