McKana Giants Mix Columbine Seeds

Columbine McKana seeds require cold stratification before sowing. Seal seeds in a damp paper towel inside a zip bag and refrigerate for 3–4 weeks to break dormancy. After stratification, press seeds onto the surface of moist seed-starting mix, and don’t cover them. McKana Giants Mix Columbine germinate in 14–30 days at 65–70°F. You can also direct-sow columbine seeds in late fall, and let winter do the stratification naturally.

Columbine McKana Giants grows in full sun or partial shade, In climates with hot summers, afternoon shade extends the bloom period by 1-2 weeks. It thrives in normal, loamy, moist, well-drained soil. Work compost into the bed before planting to get taller stems and denser flowering. Water consistently through the first year while roots establish, then back off, since mature plants become drought tolerant. 

Deadhead regularly spent flowers to extend the blooming season. After frost, cut plants to the ground; the crown overwinters fine and regrows in early spring. For cut flowers, take stems in the morning when blooms have just opened and cut at an angle. Put flowers immediately into water. Vase life runs about 5–7 days.
